Congratulations to Steve Berreth for winning April’s member of the month! It’s well deserved as our longest and most committed 5:15am member. Steve has been one of the most impressive transformations in strength and physique of the entire gym. But we don’t just pick members of the month based on progress, it’s also our way to acknowledge their great attitude and character. Steve is the embodiment of all of it. He’s disciplined and driven, he’s a joy to be around, and you won’t hear him complain. He’s exactly the type of person you want in your gym, and the type of friend you need. Learn a little about Steve in the rest of the article!
How long have you been working out for?
Off and on for about 50 years. LOL. Before joining AR Fitness, I used to walk the neighborhood, workout at Pearland Rec center, or workout at home in my son's garage gym.
What is your primary goal for coming to AR?
I wanted to support Richard and Alex's realized dream of opening a gym. This gave me additional time to spend with my son which is awesome and workout with my wife Dianne which can be intimidating but I can take it. Getting in better shape after turning 60 is an added bonus.
What keeps you motivated to come back?
As mentioned above, time with Richard and also continuing to improve my fitness level. It's a healthy addiction.
What is your favorite thing about AR?
No matter your age, fitness level or possible injury issues, you can participate in all of the classes. If there are movements that you can't do there are always modifications you can do as you work towards being able to do the movements. If an injury prevents you from doing a movement, Richard or Alex will find an alternative that fits. They promote proper form and are very attentive to everyone's needs. And all the members are very supportive whether you're competing in Hyrox or just an old man trying to get in better shape.
What’s your favorite movement?
Not sure I have a favorite movement but I have come to grudgingly enjoy the Tuesday/Thursday cardio workouts because they are beneficial for me and I have shown some improvement.
What’s your favorite hobby?
Anything sports. Texans, Astros, Rockets, college sports etc. Sports are life. When I look wayyyy back at my sports playing days I am a firm believer that sports teach life lessons including teamwork, humility, sacrifice, working towards a common goal, bonding with people of different backgrounds etc. etc.
What’s one piece of advice for someone starting out in their fitness journey?
Start at your own pace. If there are movements you aren't familiar with make sure you learn proper form first before pushing yourself. Compete against yourself and get better every week. If you can't do burpees when you start, unfortunately there are modifications and at some point you will probably be able to and be expected to do them, albeit slowly (a bit of humor). In conclusion, my advice is don't think everyone at AR is handstand walking and doing ring muscle ups. You can start your journey no matter what your current level of fitness is. Come join the team and give it a try.
What’s one thing you want others to know about you?
I am just a regular guy who married up and who the Lord blessed with three great kids. I have run the family business (Airline Seafood) for 39 years and dream of retirement (LOL).
